Arctic Summers To Turn Ice Free!

posted in Amazing Facts, Ozone Updates |

It is being predicted that Summers in the Arctic Ocean will turn ice free by 2040. this is way too early than was previously expected. This scenario is being predicted by the computers that assume that the greenhouse gas emissions will continue without any change.

Gases like carbon dioxide that are emitted into the atmosphere by the industries and automobiles are a major reason for this change.

According to the study, if the gases continue building up in the atmosphere at the current rate, then the ice around the sea will continue to decrease for many decades and then will suddenly disappear.

In the Arctic, the summer cause the ice to melt and thus reduces the ice cover to its minimum. By around September, the arrival of winter usually refreezes the sea ice.According to the prediction, by September sea ice coverage will reduce from about 2.3 million square miles to 770,000 square miles within a period of ten years.

By 2040 only a nominal amount of sea ice will remain near the north coasts of Greenland and Canada, while most parts of the ocean basin will continue to be ice free throughout the summer.

This could have far reaching effects on the plants and animals that reside in these areas. This is yet another example of global warming, what next?
